Hello there! Welcome back to 20s doses! Feel at home! Let’s jump right in, shall we?
Last Monday, the 8th of March, was international women’s day!
Here we celebrate the tremendous efforts, put by men and women around the world in shaping a more equal future!
A world with myriad opportunities for all to grab, regardless of gender. A world where a woman can be a mother, a wife, an entrepreneur, a career builder, or all of this at once!
Women’s day brings clarity, defying the idea of a world of differences.
And, here’s to all the incredibly strong women in the world! May we be them! May we know them! May we raise them!
Also, here’s to all the supportive men that enable, and encourage an equal world! Bless your hearts!
I’ve prepared a list of 5 women, who have made a name for themselves in 2020 & 2021. I have one word for all readers in the blog : celebrate! You are going to leave here inspired to take the world by storm!
East or west, home is best! Let’s start with our very own, Majimbo!
You know the face, you definitely know the voice, the potato crisps, and the 1990s shades! She is an icon, a comedienne, a Covid-19 relief package, and a star in the making!
She gained recognition during Covid-19 quarantine period by making funny quarantine videos. Her videos have been applauded by Lupita Nyong’o, Miss Universe, Snoop Dogg, and many others!
Today, she is an ambassador for MAC cosmetics, and Rihanna’s Fenty where she showcases the brand’s glasses. In 2020, she won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite African Social Star! In the same year, You tuber Lily Singh presented Majimbo with her “ Creator Honor” Award at the Streamy Awards.
2020 was a rough year for all of us. And, Majimbo, just an ordinary student making videos, managed to help us laugh our way through! Props to her!
Second in the list, is the First Woman, First Black, and First South Asian Vice President : Kamala Harris!
Female firsts have made headlines throughout history, but Kamala Harris has taken a historic step in the corridors of power! She has shattered numerous glass ceilings, with her election as the 49th vice president of United States.
Currently, she is the highest ranking and most powerful female elected official in US history! Previously, Harris served as the attorney general of California, and a senator for California.
Harris has changed the face of leadership! She has challenged long – held stereotypes, and double standards ; She has inspired countless women and girls! She is a superhero!
” While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.” – Kamala Harris.
Her experience of work will bring a unique perspective in policy decisions, administration priorities, navigation of Covid-19, economic, racial, and justice crises! Wishing her the very best!
An award winning television writer and producer, Shonda Rhimes, took 2021 by storm when she produced Bridgerton!
It is the drama series of the year! We just can’t get enough of the drama, British accent, 90s traditions, laughter, and lastly Lady Whistledown!
Shonda has created hit television shows like How to Get Away with Murder, Scandal, and Grey’s Anatomy.
Her strong woman characters in these TV shows have served as examples of living boldly, and speaking one’s mind! Through her writing and production, she has weaved in themes of equality and feminism.
Shonda also uses her interviews and media appearances to bring to attention issues like gender equality, pay gap, and police brutality.
We celebrate her shows for promoting equality regardless of gender, race, class, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation! These are the very efforts that Women’s Day celebrates!
Ngozi Okonjo Iweala.
Next, we have Nigeria’s very own Ngozi Okonjo! 1st March saw Ngozi Okonjo become the first African woman to become Director General of World Trade Organization!
She has not only defied the odds of patriarchy, but also the odds of old age! Why? Under Donald Trump’s administration, she was blocked from appointment, despite strong endorsements.
However, (here comes the supportive men) Joe Biden’s administration supported her appointment. And, at 66 she accepted the invitations and scaled the ranks at WTO!
Previously, Okonjo spent a 25 year career at World Bank as finance minister of Nigeria under two presidents.
She was the first woman to serve as the country’s finance minister, the first woman to serve in office twice, and the first minister to have served under two presidents! Truly, she is a phenomenal woman with a lot of firsts to celebrate!!!
In 2020, Covid-19 hit the whole world! And, the question on everyone’s mind was when a vaccine to prevent Covid-19 would be developed.
Well, one of the most powerful and key players in the search for the vaccine was Kathrin Jansen, head of vaccine research and development at Pfizer.
In March 2020, she led a team of 650 experts, in collaboration with BioNTech to develop a successful vaccine against Covid-19.
Previously, she led the development of HPV vaccine, and newer versions of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. Kudos to her, for helping prevent one of the biggest headache of 2020 & 2021!
WOMEN’S RIGHTS ACTIVISTS.
I acknowledge and applaud all the women in the world, joining forces to create positive change! Whether it’s ensuring girls have access to school, and sanitary towels, or that girls aren’t forcefully married.
Or, even preventing domestic violence, rape, SGBV especially in 2020, when people took advantage of quarantine to harass others! Kudos to these women! This is the way to go for all!
Lastly, shout out to all women collectively including myself! I hope that you feel celebrated, and inspired to build a better world where all thrive regardless of our differences! Man, or woman, you can make a difference! You can be a first!
